So you’ve probably heard about Microneedling, and possibly about the newest laser addition to the Arabella team of lasers – Genius Radiofrequency Microneedling. We sat down with our Nurse Practitioner, Claire Cross, to dive into all things RF microneedling and how it compares to traditional microneedling. If you want some addition information on Microneedling with the SkinPen, see this blog post!
How does RF microneedling work?
The Lutronic Genius utilizes a machine with a hand piece and one-time use tip to make small micro-injuries in the skin. The laser then sends thermal heat into the channels created by the microneedles. We are able to penetrate the skin deeper than traditional microneedling for extra collagen and elastin stimulation. This causes tightening of lines and wrinkles, improves skin texture, helps with skin laxity and scarring, and improves overall appearance of skin.
Why should I get RF microneedling?
This treatment is great for improving fine to moderate lines and wrinkles, skin texture, pore size, acne scars, skin laxity, and has also been found to help improve the appearance of cellulite. We recommend pairing this treatment with the ultra laser following (referred to as a total skin solution) to additionally improve skin texture and also help with stubborn pigment.
Is it painful?
This is one of our more intense treatments (beauty is pain right?!) – but your comfort is one of our top priorities during treatments. We do all we can to make this treatment as tolerable, and effective as possible.
We start by applying our medical grade topical numbing cream. We leave this on for an extended period of time. Along with this we use something called a zimmer during your treatment, which blows out very cold air onto the skin to help with any potential heat discomfort. Our newest addition for pain management is pro-nox (aka laughing gas) as a complimentary add-on for patients to utilize which makes the treatment very tolerable. Nitrous is very quick acting and you are able to drive home 10-15 minutes following your treatment.
Is there any downtime?
We tell patients that it can be normal to expect 24-72 hours of redness and/or mild swelling. It will feel like you have a mild to moderate sunburn. Skin may purge (breakout) a few days after treatment if you are more prone to acne breakouts but this will resolve within a few days. If we do a total skin treatment, you will have more of a hot sensation for the next few hours and then a sandpaper texture to skin for a few days post treatment.
You are able to apply makeup 24 hours post treatment if needed.
What areas can be treated?
The most commonly treated areas include the face, neck, above the knees, and the upper arms. Many people like to combine areas in one treatment (ie face and neck) but we can also treat various specific areas. If you’re curious, just ask!
When will I see results?
You may start to see improvement in skin texture over the next few weeks, but optimal results will occur as you complete the series and up to 6 months following treatment. Be patient – good things take time!
Should I do RF Microneedling or Microneedling with the SkinPen?
So now that you have more information on this treatment you may be wondering which one is right for you? Well, simply put, they are both wonderful treatments and you can’t go wrong. But depending on your specific needs one may be more beneficial of a treatment.
I like to tell patients that RF Microneedling is a more effective option for those who have more advanced signs of aging, texture, scarring, or skin laxity. This is also the best choice if you are wanting to address areas of the body besides the face or neck. And if pigment is an issue, combining this treatment with the ultra laser is kind of like the icing on the cake for a fabulous treatment.
